Sometimes, when you’re trying to quit drinking, the voice in your head can get really loud. So I send out free one minute audio messages of encouragement (and ass-kicking) to anyone who wants them. This is a transcript of One Minute Message #005.

Any voice you hear in your head
that isn’t saying “take good care of you”
is wolfie (the voice that says “Drink Now”).

Do you hear this voice:
You need to start making homemade applesauce at 10 p.m.

That’s not you.

Do you hear this voice:
You need to make a 3-course dinner, pack a lunch, iron a shirt, clean the floor by hand, why isn’t anybody helping me?

That isn’t you.

When you hear a voice that says:
I think I’ll have a cup of tea, and sit down, and have a break,
that’s you. That’s you taking good care of you.

Do you have a voice that says:
I need to go have a bath now before I got to bed, it’ll help me unwind, it’ll help me sleep. Do you hear that voice? That’s you.

Any other voice you hear is wolfie.
Wolfie likes to wind you up
so that drinking seems like a good idea.

Starting applesauce at 10 p.m. — that’s never a good idea!
